MIT Festival of Learning Expo

MIT Festival of Learning Expo The Festival of Learning is an annual event organized by the MIT Office of Digital Learning around the idea that we need to bring technology and pedagogy together for effective learning. I blogged an overview of the first Festival here. This post is the second of a series of three posts about this years Festival. It highlights the latest developments in education at MIT and beyond, showcased at the FoL Learning Expo. The Institute is on the forefront of digital and project-based education. Technological aids and passionate faculty work hard to ensure that we graduate with the practical tools necessary in the workplace. This year, the Festival of Learning Expo showcased 29(!) amazing developments at MIT and beyond. Two hours was not nearly enough to see the booths. The presenters were thrilled to tell me about their projects, and I wanted to try all the demos. Making Creative Radio at WMBR WMBR is the MIT community radio, run entirely by MIT students and alumni. Many of my friends have been involved with the group, some producing their own radio shows as early as sophomore year of college! This year, WMBR is exploring new creative techniques. Most recently, they experimented with ambient noise by equipping one of the members with six microphones for a fictional “quest” to turn in a problem set. The student was recorded for twenty minutes, rushing down the Infinite and bumping into friends. After the success of this exploration, WMBR is now working on more. Educational Studies Program MIT ESP is a student group that organizes two of the most beloved weekends on campus: Splash and Spark. Splash is a weekend for high school students to learn from MIT student and alumni volunteers, and Spark is its counterpart for middle schoolers. You can’t miss the events on campus. Dozens of smaller students flood the hallways for classes on anything from mythology to underwater basket weaving to number theoryâ€"the motto is “teach anything” and the 200+ MIT instructors fully take advantage of the freedom of choice. The program has become so popular with visitors that ESP is now looking for more teachers. Anyone can joinâ€"remember, you can teach anything! And if you cant make it to Splash or Spark, neither as a participant nor instructor, check out other ESP programs at esp.mit.edu. J-WEL: Sparking an Education Renaissance J-WEL, or the Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Laboratory, is the most recent project to come out of the MIT Campaign for a Better World, and the Laboratory  representatives came to the Expo with the goal of raising awareness of their launch. They asked me to emphasize that J-WEL is developing platform for faculty and students to engage with MIT and the world. The group aims to spark a global education renaissance for learners across ages and geography by assembling a global community for sustainable transformation through research policy, pedagogy, and practice. And they hope that more students and faculty get involved today! Kinect Interactive Simulation Try it! Although I wasnt able to operate the Kinect molecular dynamics simulation myself (turns out, Microsoft Kinect doesnt work well for people in black clothing!), I loved the concept and had fun watching the student presenters use the application. The project, built at the Interactive Materials Learning Laboratory, allows students to experience basics physics hands-on through simple Kinect simulations. The student in the picture below is exploring molecular dynamics, playing with a fundamental concept in materials science. PHeT and Accessibility: Verbal Description of Scientific Graphics PHeT has long been students and instructors’ go-to resource for interactive physics simulations. Now the group is working on making their software more accessible, with the aim of enabling all students to experience authentic scientific discovery. The expansion is happening with continuous input from students with disabilities themselves. PHeT creators believe that, in making their resources more accessible, they will improve everyone’s educational experienceâ€"not just the experience of students with physical disabilities. CodeSeal: Integrating Computation into GIRs CodeSeal  is looking for computational curriculum developers to help bring coding into every major and discipline. The idea behind CodeSeal is to help students learn programming within their department. For example, students in introductory physics could practice modeling basic simulationsâ€"CodeSeal mentors would introduce the minimum programming skills to succeed in the field. The CodeSeal team is currently in the process of reaching out to MIT faculty and staff to bring the program to undergraduate classrooms. They are also looking for faculty, staff, and students to help out with the planning, creating programming tutorials, and outreach. Guided Discovery in Engineering Science Guided Discovery, an initiative led by Professor Emanuel Sachs, refers to the collection of short classroom labs offered in MIT introductory mechanical engineering classes to introduce complex concepts in an intuitive way. The labs are neither difficult nor expensive, but they still model essential ideas effectivelyâ€"ideas that are often hard to comprehend. Professor Sachs works with professors to integrate labs into recitations and spark student discussion. And at the Expo booth, he offered me to try three of the labs! I got to form conjectures, see the experiments, and discuss the resultsâ€"all in under five minutes per activity! I loved the experience. If only Professor Sachs could talk to all the instructors of MIT’s General Institute Requirementsâ€"Id understand basic GIR concepts so much better! MIT Museum The MIT Museum booth featured some of my favorite things: Legos and robots. The latter veered dangerously close to the edge of the table as I approached, which made for a great conversation starter with the Museum representativesâ€"apparently, I was not the only one rushing to save the machines from the fall. The MIT Museum is known for its amazing educational programs for local students, as well as its MIT course offerings. STS.050 The History of MIT, for example, is a hugely popular seminar. Currently, the Museum team is organizing the 12th annual Cambridge Science Festival, held April 13-22. The Festival is week-long nerd extravaganza that will feature a Science Carnival Robot Zoo and the 2018 Curiosity Challenge, among other exciting events. You can still apply to host some of the events here! STEMgem: Create Your Own Tech STEMgem is a toolkit for schoolchildren to create basic wearable devices to monitor movement, health, and more. STEMgem allows young engineers to build devices with social impact, experience STEM as a team, and have a great time in the process! As the picture below shows, the components of the device are quite basic. The students just need to connect them to an Arduino or a Raspberry Pi. The teachers can then incorporate the project into the class materialâ€"the STEMgem website offers free lesson plans for educators. Although anyone can purchase a STEMgem online, the creators hope more teachers buy devices for science electivesâ€"I think that would be wonderful. MIT Libraries Digital Data and Privacy Resources Happy Digital Privacy Day from the MIT Libraries! I got a Libraries camera cover at the booth, plus booklets about all the data and privacy resources the Libraries can provide, such as managing and storing research data, expert help with copyright and publishing, and using published figures in student work through the MIT Libraries’ agreement with several major publishers. I continue to be amazed by how much the Libraries have to offer. I have frequently taken advantage of their resources for my research projects on anything from neuroscience and child development to political systems and media studies. OCW: New Features, New Content OpenCourseWare is one of MIT’s most famous resources, used by thousands of students and educators around the world. It seems like nothing new could be said about the project, but OCW was at the Expo to talk about their process of shifting the focus of the platform to educators (along with adding new content, as always). The creators believe that marketing OCW to instructors will have a multiplication effect of reaching the intellectually curious. For greater effect, OCW even provides  resources aligned with the Common Core standards. Besides that, OpenCourseWare is adding useful features such as easier search and filter functions and a collection of videos for help with high school AP exams. The latter has earned OCW the highest praiseâ€"a student recently reached out saying that he passed his AP exams in a district with no AP classes offered. We certainly need more such resources in the United States. ODL Residential Education The Office of the Vice President of Digital Learning  helps instructors and students bring educational innovations, such as the “flipped classroom” to schools around the world. The Residential MITx platform offers students rapid feedback and allows instructors to self-author their course sites. Other ODL programs support research-based teaching, organize events to help communities beyond MIT, and provide classroom tools. And, of course, the ODL organized this Festival, which was astounding! MITx MicroMasters: Bringing MIT to You The  MITx MicroMasters program provides accelerated master’s academic credentials online, available at  edX.org. The currently available degrees are Supply Chain Management, Principles of Manufacturing, and Data, Economics Development Policy, with more coming soon. Although MicroMasters provides graduate-level courses, don’t forget: edX  features some great undergraduate courses as well. MIT Experimental Study Group MIT ESG is a popular program for first-year undergraduates. With fun topics on anything from nutrition to educational videos, ESG classes get filled up quickly. I personally have gotten turned away from the courses, which give priority to the small group of ESG members. During the MIT Campus Preview Weekend for accepted undergraduates, ESG students host the Firehose event, showcasing their interests in a late-night series of lectures. Three years ago, Firehose was an important factor in my decision to comMITâ€"an ESG student led a 2am lecture on number theory, which quickly dissolved into a session on Polynesian geography! Lightboard for Lecture Video Capture The Lightboard is an invention particularly close to my heartâ€"don’t think I could have passed physics without it. The board allows instructors to easily record videos by standing behind the transparent board and writing in front of them with neon whiteboard markers. There’s no need to prepare presentation in advance, or film with the professor’s back to the camera. Like Khan Academy, the Lighboard is a major advancement for “flipped” or “hybrid” classrooms that have been praised as the future of education. Professor Peter Dourmashkin, the instructor for mostly-freshmen Physics I and II and a student favorite, spends 15-20 hours a week behind the board, recording problem-solving videos on the material he wasn’t able to cover in class time. For me, these videos were the first step in studying for midterms and exams. NEET: New Engineering Education Transformation NEET, or the New Education Transformation, was the booth where I spent most of my time, mainly because of the contagious passion of the mentors. NEET is a program for undergraduates in the MIT School of Engineering who would like to pursue a project-based curriculum. Students enroll in the program at the start of their sophomore year, beginning with theoretical seminars and later building Autonomous Machines or Living Machines project. Those who decide to stick around can get a NEET certificate upon graduation in addition to a degree in their major. In a politically brilliant move, the NEET founders were able to build the program within the existing MIT guidelines, so students can get all the benefits of project-based learning without the fear of getting behind on their classwork. In fact, NEET participants get priority for enrollment in popular classes outside of their majors! For example, mechanical engineers can enroll in oversubscribed electrical engineering courses or vice versa â€"NEET a great opportunity for interdisciplinary learning as well. The program is currently in its second semester and the students have just started building their first projects, but the mentors are already looking to expand to other MIT Schools, prompted by overwhelming faculty interest and suport. Personally, I am thrilled to see this project-centric scheme, and look forward to having it implemented in my Political Science departmentâ€"the NEET team plans to work closely with the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences next year. CLeVR Virtual Reality for Science Learning CLeVR, the VR software for highly interactive virtual reality solutions, led the most popular booth at the Expo, so I did not get to experience their demos. 3. inleiding Het onderwerp is: de elektronische leeromgeving Ik heb voor dit onderwerp gekozen, omdat ik er vrij veel gebruik van maak. Een andere reden is dat het nog niet zo lang is ingevoerd op deze school. Aangezien elke leerling op een andere manier omgaat met de elektronische leeromgeving, ben ik benieuwd of dat ook verband heeft met de leerstijlen van de leerling. De opzet van dit verslag is volgens de wetenschappelijke methode. 4. Onderzoeksvraag: Is er een verband tussen de waardering van de elektronische leeromgeving (Teletop) door leerlingen en de leerstijl? 5. Hypothese Aan de hand van de literatuur verwacht ik dat: Denkers: Deze leerlingen kijken vaak op Teletop, als de docent hier veel gebruik van maakt. Denkers mailen de docent via Teletop om vragen te stellen. Ze zien het nut van Teletop in. Het cijfer dat ik daarom verwacht is: 7 Doeners: Zij kijken regelmatig op Teletop. Waarschijnlijk alleen om te kijken of er nog iets nieuws op staat. Ze kijken vooral of er wat moet gebeuren voor de volgende les. Zij vinden Teletop handig. Cijfer dat ik verwacht is: 8 Dromers: Leerlingen met deze leerstijl weten dat ze op Teletop kunnen kijken en denken er ook wel over na, maar vergeten vervolgens om daadwerkelijk op Teletop te gaan kijken. En als ze erop zijn, kunnen ze vaak niks vinden. Cijfer dat ik verwacht is: 7 Beslissers: Zij vragen zich af of het nodig is om op Teletop te kijken. Het hangt af van de noodzaak, of zij op Teletop zullen gaan kijken. Zij hebben niet zoveel met Teletop omdat ze denken het niet nodig te hebben. Cijfer dat ik verwacht is: 6 6. Onderzoeksinstrument: Onderzoeksinstrument: het opzetten van functionele kwantitatieve en kwalitatieve enqutes en het trekken van duidelijke conclusies. Ik heb dit instrument gekozen, omdat dit het beste past bij het onderzoek dat doe. 7. Onderzoeksplan: De volgende dingen ben ik van plan: Literatuur onderzoek: de leerstijlen opfrissen en een hypothese opstellen. Leerlingen een leerstijlen test laten maken om de leerstijl te bepalen. Een enqute maken voor leerlingen, waarin ik vragen stel over teletop D.m.v. gekregen informatie en literatuur conclusies trekken om mijn hoofdvraag te kunnen beantwoorden. ik neem de enqute af in de klassen waarin ik les geef. Ik wil de gegevens per klas verwerken en hier conclusies uit trekken. 8. Literatuur onderzoek In 1984 heeft Kolb een boek gepubliceerd met de titel Experiential learning: experience as the source of learning and development. In dit boek beschrijft hij 17 jaar onderzoek naar ervaringsgericht leren. Volgens Kolb: Leren is het proces waarbij kennis wordt gecreerd door de transformatie van ervaring. Het vermeerderen van kennis volgt dus uit ervaringen en dit noemen wij leren. Dit leren is een proces dat ingedeeld kan worden in verschillende fasen (zie 1). Wanneer je iets meemaakt (ervaring) is het belangrijk daarna je ervaringen te overdenken (reflectie) en te veralgemeniseren (verkennen van theorie). Je kunt vervolgens een aanpak bedenken waarmee je een overeenkomstige gebeurtenis tegemoet kan treden (experimenteren). Vervolgens doorloop je de cirkel opnieuw. Deze cirkel kan beschreven worden in een assenstelsel waarvan de verticale as verloopt van abstract naar concreet en de horizontale as verloopt van actief naar passief. De vier fasen herhalen zich volgens Kolb voortdurend in deze volgorde. Het is echter niet nodig altijd met een concrete ervaring (bovenaan de cirkel) te beginnen. Het kwadrant waar een individu het liefst begint voor een effectieve leerervaring, noemen we zijn leerstijl. Kolb legt uit dat de meeste mensen als gevolg van erfelijkheid, vroegere ervaringen en de eisen van huidige omstandigheden, sommige leervaardigheden beter ontwikkelen dan andere. Dit leidt tot een verschil in hoe mensen leren; ze ontwikkelen verschillende leerstijlen. Kolb omschrijft vier soorten leerstijlen: de accommoderende, divergerende, assimilerende en convergerende leerstijl. Populairder gezegd: de doener, de dromer, de denker en de beslisser (zie tabel ). Discussie Als eerste wil ik kijken naar mijn hypothese. Ik ga elke leerstijl bij langs in hoeverre ik dichtbij de uitkomsten zat of er helemaal naast zat. Denkers: Deze leerlingen kijken vaak op Teletop, als de docent hier veel gebruik van maakt. Denkers mailen de docent via Teletop om vragen te stellen. Ze zien het nut van Teletop in. Het cijfer dat ik daarom verwacht is: 7 Het cijfer wat de leerlingen hebben gegeven is een 6,6. Ze zijn minder positief over teletop dan ik had verwacht. Ook mailen ze niet snel een docent als ze iets niet snappen. Ze vragen eerder een klasgenoot. Dit vind ik zeer begrijpelijk. Ze kijken gemiddeld wel het meest op teletop. Doeners: Zij kijken regelmatig op Teletop. Waarschijnlijk alleen om te kijken of er nog iets nieuws op staat. Ze kijken vooral of er wat moet gebeuren voor de volgende les. Zij vinden Teletop handig. Juist voor dromers is teletop een extra hulpmiddel om alles op een rijtje te hebben. Het bied ze extra structuur. Beslissers: Zij vragen zich af of het nodig is om op Teletop te kijken. Het hangt af van de noodzaak, of zij op Teletop zullen gaan kijken. Zij hebben niet zoveel met Teletop omdat ze denken het niet nodig te hebben. Cijfer dat ik verwacht is: 6 Het cijfer wat 1 leerling heeft gegeven is een 8,8. Dit is wel hoger dan ik had verwacht, maar omdat het maar om 1 leerling gaat kan ik deze resultaten niet geldig verklaren, helaas. 11. Conclusie: Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat de waardering voor de elektronische leeromgeving niet leerstijl afhankelijk is. Er zit wel verschil in waardering voor teletop tussen de verschillende leerstijlen. Maar het is niet iets wat je aan de leerstijl kunt toeschrijven. Daar voor lopen de waarderingen cijfermatig niet ver genoeg uit elkaar. Er is wel iets anders uit het onderzoek gekomen is dat niet in de onderzoeksvraag zat. Namelijk dat Mavo/Havo leerlingen teletop meer waarderen dan vwo leerlingen. Dit is te verklaren doordat VWO leerlingen de extra stof, die vaak op een elektronische leeromgeving te vinden is, niet nodig vinden. 12. Evaluatie en reflectie De waardering voor teletop zou niveau afhankelijk kunnen zijn. Dit zou een vervolg onderzoek waard zijn. Het lastigste was het sorteren van de leerlingen in hun leerstijlen. Hier heb ik naast de resultaten ook mijn eigen gedachten erop los gelaten. En dan vooral bij de leerlingen waar twee leerstijlen vrij gelijk naar voren kwamen. Zo heb ik de lastigere leerstijl uitslagen van de leerstijlentest toch onder weten te verdelen. Ik kan het resultaat van Floris en Max niet verwijderen. Dit zou de eerlijkheid van het onderzoek niet ten goede komen. Maar als ik meer resultaten had gehad waren die twee drien in het niet gevallen. Het was mooier geweest voor het eindresultaat als ik een groter N getal had, maar dan was het geen klein onderzoek meer gebleven. Had ik de resultaten van Floris en Max wel verwijderd, dan was het cijfer dat MH leerlingen gemiddeld gaven alsnog hoger dan het cijfer dat de Atheneum leerlingen gaven. Voor de conclusie had dit geen nadelige invloed gehad. Ook vond ik het verrassend dat dromers positiever zijn over teletop dan ik had verwacht. Natuurlijk omdat het ze extra structuur biedt. Hier had ik geen rekening mee gehouden bij het maken van mijn hypothese. Verder vond ik het ook lastig om goede vragen te bedenken waaruit te halen was wat hun waardering is voor teletop. Achteraf gezien had ik de vragen over het gebruik van teletop wel weg kunnen laten en had ik beter gerichte waarderingsvragen moeten stellen. Waaruit hun waardering voor teletop beter naar voren kwam. De vragen over de beweegredenen om wel of niet om teletop te kijken geeft wel een goed beeld of leerlingen het een kwelling vinden om erop te kijken of dat ze teletop handig vinden. 13. Throughout history many groups have been stigmatized not just for their race, but for their sex, and class as well. People of lower class incomes get slandered for where they live and for not having the economical means to purchase most common goods. Women have been considered the weaker sex for centuries, and currently, some of the old fashioned and ignorant theories on women being subordinate to men prevail.
